Things I am learning

G'day all!

I am very lucky. I get to live a Slow Life. I rarely have to hurry hurry hurry anywhere (if I do it is my own fault for not taking notice of time). I get to ride my bike instead of driving (driving means I have No Time). I get to make stuff and craft to my heart's content.

This morning I rode into DH's work and on further to buy him an "apothecary" jar (aka a small terrarium). He rode with me. Alas, that Michaels didn't have any! And it was a big shop too with a better variety of stuff (doh didn't get to check the yarn to see if they have sock yarn now). Then I rode home again via wholepaycheque. Now I am knackered - I was going to catch the train but I missed it by 5 minutes and in the middle of the day they only run at 30 minute intervals. It takes thirty minutes to ride home. You do the maths!

For the rest of today (apart from cooking dinner) it seems that I will be squaring up all the patchwork squares I cut yesterday and the day before.

Things I am learning:

  1. I am not very good at cutting material (even with a mat, rotary cutter and acrylic ruler)
  2. I am not very good at sewing straight lines (must get a 1/4" seam foot for the sewing machine)
  3. I am not very good at pressing (ironing straight down onto the material) or ironing (pushing the iron around on the material)
  4. I am very good at making wonky squares

:-) Ooops.

Anyway, the quilt top is coming together slowly. After I've resquared everything to the one size (how tiresome!) I can start sewing it together (after I get this fancy foot). I think it will look pretty good. This is how it looked on the bed when I just threw the patches on it to get an idea:

(excuse the blueness, I thought I had gimped that out but pics seem a bit different loaded on Flickr than they do on the Gimp, which is weird)

On Sunday I took pics to show you this sock in progress:

But by Sunday evening the sock looked like this:

So not much point, eh? Now I have to get the second one done. The toe is done, the pattern is set up, now it is go go go! Socks fly on 3mm needles! The yarn is the Merino 5 I bought at Bobbin's Nest two weeks ago. The pattern is a variant on the Mini Mochi socks I made a while ago that I have to get the pattern written up for. I am trying a heavier gauge sock to see if I can make a 54 stitch sock for people with little feet. I think it should work but the swirls are not as big/obvious.

There's still more to come but that is for another day. I have some squares to square up!

anon!

  3. Haha. I can do ok with a mat, ruler, and rotary cutter, but otherwise I'm crap at cutting out. That's probably why I never sew. I have this dumb little magnetic thing that you can move around for whatever seam allowance you want and it does work pretty well as long as I'm paying attention.

  4. Your quilt looks really pretty! I like the idea of a slow life.

PS I have a friend from uni who lives in Oz now coming to visit today and thought of you!
