CRIKEY!

G'day all!

What a day it is here too. Not that much is happening, and I haven't taken pics of my new socks yet, but I thought you ought to know the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, pegged it after being done over by a stingray! Funny isn't it that he was killed not by a croc, cos he knew how to handle them, but a different sort of something that you should never muck around with.

Plus

ARGH - sacrilege! Leave the original hokey ST alone! No Nichelle Nichols singing the theme! No more Enterprise shots with the ship wobbling on its stick. No more very obviously set in a studio shots! OK, maybe it will be good but I'm not sure....

CBS Paramount Domestic Television is releasing digitally remastered episodes of the 1960s STAR TREK sci-fi series, with all new special effects and music, to celebrate the groundbreaking series' 40th anniversary, it was announced today by John Nogawski, president of
CBS Paramount Domestic Television.... All 79 episodes of the original "Star Trek" series will eventually be remastered, with the first batch of episodes chosen from a list of "Star Trek" fans'
favorite shows. The most noticeable change will be redoing many of the special effects, created with 1960s technology, with 21st century computer-generated imagery (CGI). That includes:
- Space ship exteriors -- The space ship Enterprise, as well as other Starships, will be replaced with state of the art CGI-created ships. The new computer-generated Enterprise is based on the exact measurements of the original model, which now rests in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
- Show opening -- The Enterprise and planets seen in the main title sequence will be redone, giving them depth and dimension for the first time.
- Galaxy shots -- All the graphics of the galaxy, so frequently seen through the window on the Enterprise's bridge, will be redone.
- Exteriors -- The battle scenes, planets and ships from other cultures (notably the Romulan Bird of Prey and Klingon Battle Cruisers) will be updated.
- Background scenes -- Some of the iconic, yet flat, matte paintings used as backdrops for the strange, new worlds explored by the Enterprise crew will get a CGI face-lift, adding atmosphere and lighting.

The refurbished episodes also feature higher quality sound for the
famous opening theme....

From the B5 newsletter, the Zocalo.

At least they are not touching Spock. Touch Spock and die, suckers! A quarter of a century ago, I spent a year trying to be Spock. Didn't work, but it did give me a major appreciation for emotions :-) Oh yes, before Babylon 5 there was Blake's 7, and before that was Trek. Since B5? Nothing. Maybe Firefly was good but I wouldn't know cos I never saw it and my friends actively avoid loaning me the DVDs. Buffy/Angel didn't grab me. Smallville was ok at first but after a while its attractions waned. Battlestar Galactica? Dunno - it isn't on the TV here and I don't buy DVDs without knowing if I like something or not (especially when we have no source of income).

Hehehehehehe. Nathan found my copy of "I am Spock" that I bought in England seven years ago. Yep, seven years ago today I landed back home after a month's jaunt to the USA and England. Gosh I was glad to see a gum tree again. Anyway, I've never read the book - it is one of those things you get around to reading one day. So Nathan is reading it, and now is having to remind me that it is the book he is reading, it isn't my current book....but when he is not reading it, who is?

anon!

PS - less than two months to my *mumblieth* Big partee in exactly two months! Dunno where. Hope we have some income by then otherwise the party will be pretty pathetic and BYO.
PPS - I promise to have pics next time of something special and some knitting!

Yes, I heard about Steve Irwin at 2-30 on the ABC. He wasn't my cup of TV, but he died doing what he did best..

  4. Very sorry to hear about Steve Irwin.

And I agree re ST - leave it alone! Like they messed about with the 3 original Star Wars movies, what for? We have all ST:TOS on DVD and we ain't buying no new-fangled messed-around version :-)

A lurking knitter dropping a few comments on sci-fi...

I can't really comment on Trek, since I grew up TV-less, but I think I would tend to agree that a great deal of the attachment I have to older shows (original Doctor Who for example) is bound up in the "period" special effects. Not only do you lose that charm when they are updated, a sense of the historical continuity also disappears, I think.

As for post B5 sci-fi - you didn't mention Farscape, so I thought I would, since I have a bit of a crush on it. If you've encountered it and rejected it already, ignore me. Bascially I love that it tries to do something different and wacky, and the Australia connection popping up in its less-than-glossy-budget scenery and props. Once it settles into its groove it also provides with storylines and characters and the like (though the first few episodes tend to leave one thinking "what the..."). I don't know how it ends, actually (damn 9's scheduling habits), but I've heard good things and am working my way through the dvds from Season 1.

Steve Irwin: as he was larger than life when I saw him on tv, so is his death still slightly unreal to me...

Honestly, I'm amazed that Irwin didn't manage to do himself in before he passed on his genetic code. It really bothers me to see the film footage of his holding his 1 month old near a croc. Not only is he taunting the croc while holding a piece of meat and his child, at the same time, but his child's head is not supported and is flopping around. Have you seen that footage? Uhgh, it's really aweful. Anyway, I know it's tragic that he's passed, but I'm not terribly surprised.

  7. Oooh don't mess with classic Star Trek! That is a big no-no and I'm rather glad I don't have HDTV so I can happily ignore.

As for Battlestar Galactica. If you can get access to the DVD's I'd highly recommend it. I totally love it. It has the same feel to it that the original trek did: a morality play that just happens to take place in space. It is being helmed by one of the guys from Deep Space Nine (though I never did like that series, loved Voyager though.. we won't discuss where my Kat got her name ;) It isn't the cheesy series that was the original BG of the late 70's. This is a thoughtful, very well done couched commentary on our times. Which to me, is what the very best Trek really is.
