Last on the old, now for the new!

G'day all!

It is still New Year's Day here, so Happy New Year's Day to you all!  Last night we watched the fireworks on the Space Needle on streaming tv and we could just see the top of the fireworks between the buildings across the road!  And our neighbours didn't celebrate the New Year with their squeaky bed and shrieking, so we could even get to sleep at a semi-reasonable hour!  Hoorays all round!

A brand new year, glorious
The day dawned fair! It was so clear that we had a light frost.

A famous building by Pioneer Square
Today we went out to Pioneer Square and the International District (which really seems to be Chinatown to me but I guess they are being inclusive).  Pioneer Square was pretty much dead except for the homeless men - I think they outnumbered us about 20 to one.

Another famous building
There are some beautiful old red brick, bluestone and ?sandstone faced buildings in the area, some of the nicest I've seen in ages.

These old buildings make me squee!
The red lion, not the gold or silver one.
I don't think I took any pictures in the International District except for one of a dragon on a pole, a lion dance and a dragon mural.

Beautiful dragon

And ones of us having bubble tea.  I've never had bubble tea before.  I survived it.  I might even do it again.  The tapioca bubbles were black and flavoured with aniseed I think.

My first mouthful of bubble tea.
No, I didn't spit it out.
The cold had just hit my cracked filling.
A note for those of you visiting the area.  There are very few public toilets down there.  (OMG, I said the T word!)  And it is a long way on the light rail and bus back home.  Thankfully I didn't drink all of my bubble tea.

By the time we got home, sunset colours were starting to flare, so after a pit stop, I choofed off (in the car) up to Sunset Hill to see the end of the day.

Goodbye sun!
A crowd was up there again to see the Snowy Owls.  And boy oh boy it was c-c-c-cold!  My fingers went numb!  (I don't have gloves with the finger in them that lets me use the phone.) All in all, for me, it was a quite pleasant day.  May the New Year continue as it began!

I have two more quilty finished objects to show off, but only one will grace this page today - this post is long enough as it is!

Strip quilt - Andalucia II, Patty Young for Michael Miller

This was a very quick quilt.  I decided to cut strips of fabric and make one of the quilts that seem pretty fashionable at the moment.  I had some fat quarters that I'd bought on sale and some chocolate brown Kona cotton (don't ask me what the colour name really is) and threw this together pretty quickly.

The back is pretty simple

I had to wait to get the backing fabric - I've learned now to buy enough for a quilt and the back in one go!  But the Etsy seller shipped it very quickly.

Lovely yellow Aurifil - apparently I am very bold.
I just thought it would look nice.
This was the first quilt I did with a variety of free motion techniques - I tried different ones on the strips on the front, then a leafy vine on the brown parts.

Looks so purty in front of the Olympics and the Sound

I'm pretty pleased with this quilt.  Once I get off my butt and make the matching pillowcase(s) I'll donate it to the Children's Hospital here in Seattle.  I think it could make a tween or teenage girl pretty happy.

Now I must finish off the ReVerb2012 so that I can start on the New Year!

Day 29:  Have you heard your word?  What word did you select to be your travelling companion in 2012? What gifts did this word bring?  What word will you choose to guide you through 2013? What do you hope it will bring into your life?

I have not heard my word!  I did not select one for 2012 but I guess it would have to be trust or faith, or maybe hope.  They are my constant companions, not that I have a God or anything, but I have to trust that I am doing the right thing, have faith that things will work out and hope for the best.

This year?  My word?  I rather like the old ones.  Joy is also a good word.  I think you can guess what I hope they will bring into my life.

Day 30: What can you celebrate NOW?  Often we see our life as a humongous journey, and we believe that not only have we not arrived at our far away desired destination, but we also think we must accomplish x, y, and z, before we can declare with satisfaction that we are THERE.
For a moment, take a close look at who you are NOW. See what you can declare.
Merge the past, present, and future into one big ARRIVAL.
Describe joyously and in great celebration the BEING that you ARE.

I am still here!  That is a better start than some who are on a cancer voyage or this whole voyage of life!  And it is a great start for being able to do things :-)

I am all things and I am nothing, a mote.   I laugh and I love and I sing and I dance.  I make things.  I get ideas and run around like a crazy thing after them.  Sometimes I don't make anything at all.  I remember, I forget, I dream, I do.  I enthuse but I don't gush.  I share.

I have now - I have no idea what the future holds but I have now.

Day 31: 2013 is going to be MY YEAR because... life is unpredictable and you have to grab your chances whilst you can.

In 2013, I am going to do... things that please me and add a little to the lives of those around me.

In 2013, I am going to feel... life.  Sounds weird, feeling life not alive but maybe you get the idea.

In 2013, I am not going to... give in to fear.

In December 2013, I am going to look back and say... this was a year well lived, loved and learned.

anon!

  1. I like what you said about not living with fear and I think I'll borrow that myself.

    Happy New Year!

  2. Great travel notes, the square of homeless men sounds a bit disturbing. fun to see lions dancing! Your quilt is fabulous and the yellow leafy quilting is the best!! When I grow up I want to be able to quilt like that! Joy is a great word.
